DIVING LADIES

The neon diving ladies of the Starlite motel are an icon of the city where I grew up, Mesa, AZ. My parents and their parents also grew up here and the diving ladies were around for most of that time! The sign is on Main Street, which used to be the primary way to get out of town (either up to the mountains or west to California) before the freeways were finished in the 60s and 70s. My mom used to always say that she knew she was almost home from the long drive back to the Valley when she saw the three ladies diving away off in the distance. All three of them are named Esther to me and their aqua suits sure look cute against that pink Arizona sunset!
