There are over 100,000 lakes in Sweden! Lake Baven is a beautiful, large lake near Sparreholm, Sweden, where my grandmother grew up. By happy accident, on our trip we were able to find the small farmhouse where my grandma, Edith, was born and raised. The house (just out of view in this photo) was being renovated when we found it and the workers let us walk around inside! We saw the original wood-burning stove where my grandma, who was a truly wonderful chef, learned to cook from her mother before heading off to culinary school in Stockholm and then later on to NYC through Ellis Island. The night I took this photo on Lake Baven, there was hardly a sound anywhere! You could hear a pin drop, which made the beautiful view all the more disarming and surreal.
